Welcome back to FUT IN REVIEW | World Cup Daily #16. Despite massive sleep deprivation, John and Shaq dissect an absolute blockbuster four-match slate where global superstars completely took over.
We break down all the quality, tactics, and off-pitch drama unfiltered:
The Most Human GOAT: Lionel Messi leaves the pitch in tears after a stunning hat-trick against Algeria. Why did their passive zonal defense give him so much respect, and what does his 16th World Cup goal mean for the history books?
Ruthless Les Bleus: Senegal pushed hard, but France turned on the turbo. Kylian Mbappé breaks Olivier Giroud’s scoring record (58 goals), Bradley Barcola scores a filthy chip from a ridiculous Adrien Rabiot pass, and we question if France’s midfield has a hidden weakness.
The Viking Debut: Erling Haaland bags a clinical brace on his World Cup debut as Norway crushes Iraq 4-1. Plus, a huge shoutout to Antonio Nusa for tearing up the wings and Leo Østigård for an insane bullet header.
The Mad Donkey Delivers: Austria beats Jordan 3-1 in a late stoppage-time thriller. We discuss Marko Arnautović's disallowed VAR handball, his redemption goal two minutes later, and a goalkeeping disaster class.
The Golden Boot Plot: With Messi, Mbappé, and Haaland all firing at least two goals on the same day, we are witnessing the craziest Golden Boot race ever.

[00:00:00] Last night at the World Cup, Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick. His first ever at a World Cup and he was in tears after the first goal. He said it had nothing to do with football. He went through difficult days and he wouldn't say what they were. He's 38 years old and he's tied for the most World Cup goals in history and he has never looked more unique.
[00:00:30] Welcome back to FUT IN REVIEW, World Cup Daily, Episode 16, Day 6 is done. And my name is Jon, I'll be hosting today and I'm joined by the man, the myth and legend all the way from down under, it's Sjak. Welcome back Sjak. Hey Jon, really looking forward to having this conversation and just talk about all the wonderful football we saw today. There was a lot of quality on display, can't wait to talk about it. Yeah, a lot of quality, a lot of matches and unfortunately that means not much sleep. So we'll struggle through this one I'm afraid. I'll do my best though.
[00:00:59] Sjak, yesterday was the best day of football we've had at this tournament so far. Messi scored a hat-trick and he cried. Haaland scored twice on his World Cup debut. Mbappé broke France's all-time scoring record and Austria beat Jordan in stoppage time. Four games, Day 6 definitely delivered.
[00:01:17] But what a day, Sjak. What a day. Quality. I mean, right from the first half itself, it almost felt like a repeat of yesterday where we would probably get like a Senegal drawing with France and it being a 0-0 draw and all the parallels that would come out after the first half. It literally felt like this is going to be an upset incoming and then boom. The whole day just changed after that first half, the whole day. Because the second half of that France-Denital game was just quality football. Really good football.
[00:01:47] I think first half was good as well, but I said at the start of the tournament or actually before, the biggest challenge France has is to keep motivating themselves, like to go all the way. And you saw in the first half, they were like, oh, we can do this. Oh, they actually scored. Oh, they didn't go through. That was a good shot. But maybe we should be focusing a little bit. And then second half, I think Deshaun said like, guys, come on, we should just focus for 10 minutes and it's going to be good.
[00:02:14] Oof. That quality of that team though, Sjak. Where do you want to start? Look, I think let's give, let's give Senegal their dues because you're quite right. They did play really well in the first half, but almost for me, it felt almost like France didn't show up. Like you said, they didn't really come across and say, oh, this is a tough game. They just thought, yeah, we'll just come through. And Senegal just was dominating. If you ask someone at the end of the first half who's going to win the game, it's almost felt like a Senegal was in the ascendancy.
[00:02:39] But the second half, the quality on display from this and bear in mind out of all the people, there was Barco that played really well. And Barco had an amazing game. Alise had a lovely game. Rabiot had a great game. And you had people that came off like that player like Dembele that didn't even play exceptionally today. And still they were so comfortably good in the second half. And Barco came from the, like I said, with the Netherlands, the issue is when they sub out the strikers, we don't have any speed left. Yeah.
[00:03:06] They sub in out their super fast strikers and it's like, he's more speed. There you go. Good luck. And I didn't even mention Desiree Duet. He played pretty well as well today. So they've got so much talent and when the talent all clicks together, like it did today in the, not all of it did, but still they have like, as you said, Barco just came on Dembele goes up, Barco comes on a few 30 odd seconds or whatever seconds he scores a goal. Like, it's just ridiculous what they have on this. And he's not only scores goal. He gets a insane through ball pass.
[00:03:36] It was like almost playing a game of FIFA with all the through balls and they all hit somewhere offside first goal. But that second goal in the Barco, that insane pass. Rabiot. And Barco just lobbed it. Just one touch, one lob. Just beautiful. Yeah, it was, I think that was one of the goals where I stood up and actually applauded. I'm like, whoa. And not like a great shot or anything.
[00:03:59] I mean, the third goal from, or the second goal from Mbappe or the third goal from France was a great shot, but this just, this is one scary team. Yeah. You bring up a good point. All three goals are really good in their own ways. What was your favorite out of the three? The second one. Yeah, exactly. The second one. Because of everything that came in front. Plus the touch was insane. But it's like, Barco was really good. Like just came in really good, but it was also, I've forgotten name. That was Rabiot's Pass.
[00:04:29] The Rabiot's Pass. Yeah. Like. Rabiot's Pass. When people saw Rabiot's star, it was like, why him? But if you look at, if you give that guy the freedom to just move around. Whoa. It's like, I know that I've said 10 times, whoa, already, but yeah, it's an, it's not only an insane team, but the combination, the true passes. It's just like, if the Browner did this or Messi gave a pass like this, everyone would be talking about it for weeks. Yeah. I completely agree.
[00:04:56] But having said that though today, I mean, I'm not trying to be critical of France at all, but I think the only, not weakness, the only area that off the pitch that looked a bit incomplete was the midfielder. I know Robbie had a great game. Sherman, he had a decent game, but I can't think of these two in a tough game to actually take the game by the scruff of its neck. Like, for example, like a Spain could do even like an England could do. I think they will struggle if, if, if teams are set up nicely against them.
[00:05:21] But again, look, I'm just trying to find a small little tiny flaw in something that's almost perfect. If there was any flaw, I think it wasn't the goalkeeper's best match, Manjan. Yes. Lucky as well when the ball passed off his butt outside of the goal. But the thing is though, you talk about these midfielders, they don't need to like, you saw it after they scored the first goal. They just go lean back a little bit. Hmm.
[00:05:45] And then the other team has to come and they're not great defenders, those two midfielders, but the rest of the team is pretty strong on defense. Then they gave the ball to a Rubio. He said he sends away one of these passes behind enemy lines. And there's just no, no defending that. I mean, Koulibaly definitely lost some speed. Then that's clear yesterday as well, but just not, there's no defending.
[00:06:07] Like if a team is attacking and they are defending and they give a ball behind enemy lines and it's, it's a ridiculously fast ball, but you've got such amazing players up front that they can manage to take that ball. You can't defend that. Yeah. So the moment they're in the lead, it's, it's basically a done deal. Exactly. Exactly. It was, you're quite right. I think they just were able to shut, not shut shop, but also it could just be like a back, a back line that's really compact and the forward line all four can create and do whatever.
[00:06:37] They want to do. And that's just would work once they go ahead. That'll just work really well. Yeah. Normally if you want fast player, right? You send the ball forward and like I said with Egypt, you have got Mamouche and Salah. Then you have an exception with two, like they do in Sweden did. Yeah. But France is just, he has four fast players. Oh, and if they're tired, we'll bring in another four. That's fine. Exactly. So, and it's not only speed because people say in Bop's play, especially when you listen to the F, the F community, FIFA community, the game, they say Mbappe can't really shoot.
[00:07:07] Well, he definitely showed everyone that he can still shoot. That's not an issue either. So yeah, that match was amazing. I can talk about this whole podcast, which we should not do, but Mbappe broke the goal scorer record from Olivier Giroud at 58 goals currently. And of course his world championship isn't even over and he's two goals behind the closest all time world record of 16. But then again, someone else got even closer yesterday. And we'll talk about that in a moment.
[00:07:35] Shout out to Mbappe, I think, youngest African goal scorer in the World Cup at 18 years and 143 days. That's pretty cool. Very cool. Very cool. So we can say that France delivered and top star Mbappe delivered, which brought us to the next match, which was Norway versus Iraq. And of course, we saw Haaland in every single advertisement. Norway is definitely advertising Haaland like the next best thing.
[00:08:02] Since Salman, did he deliver? I think he delivered as well. Yeah. So post the back post goal, Haaland really early on. The strength of that guy is insane, but also the running speed and the pure tenacity has got like in front of goal. First goal, they just hoof the ball in front of goal as hard as they can, knowing he will probably be there somewhere. And he was.
[00:08:31] It's not like the most finesse shot or finesse goal, but it's just raw power to everyone else. I want to give a shout out to Hussain who scored not only the first goal, but that guy can do a header. Oh my God. Yes, what a header. And that's not his only one either. So they just cross the ball and he comes from out of nowhere. It's an insane jump, but it's technique on the header, Shaq. That ball accelerated. Insane. So we've seen some lovely headers this tournament.
[00:08:58] I think, unfortunately I wasn't on the show yesterday, but Iran's equalizing header yesterday was exceptional. All across what I had a same today. He said it was wonderful. They were just in the right place at the right time. Bang and the goal. It was, it was really good. Yeah. I think, uh, of course, unfortunately they scored like talk about headers. Ostigar came in crossed. I think that was one of the best header I've seen in my life. And apparently he does this for fun. Uh, he scores a lot of headers.
[00:09:27] I don't even, I didn't even know the guy to be fair, but Leo Ostigar. Wow. This is a tournament that's well, that doesn't make myself more believable for everyone listening. Cause I said a couple of things. I said, it's going to be low scoring. Well, that didn't happen so far. I said, a crossing is dead. Well, I was a little bit mistaken over there because apparently when you have good players, it can work. And I said something about Lionel Messi, which I might have to rephrase. After we started next year. Yes, yes, yes, yes. Absolutely.
[00:09:56] I think we have a lot of talking to do with Lionel Messi. Cause I do remember your words. We'll get there. Definitely. But there are Hallal scores two goals as well. They beat Iraq four to one. Yeah. Much more to say about that match. I think the team looks strong. I think they did well. And yeah. The likes of Odegaard. I don't think Odegaard had a good game, but they still scored four goals. So that shows that this team's got more levels to go if they really want to. That's very promising. I think the guy on the wing blanking on his name right now.
[00:10:26] He had an exceptional game. He was the only one that was just taking everyone on from Norway. I'm completely blanking on his, on his name right now, but we actually shouted him out. And when we said the youngsters to watch, we actually shouted him out as well. So yeah, that guy was exceptional today. I will try and find his name as we talk. Uh, was it, uh, wasn't the archness? It was Sturlert? No, sir. No, sir. Of course. Yeah. He was great today. He was really, really good today. And I think this team's got a lot of levels to go and I'm really excited to see how they
[00:10:56] actually shape up because they don't really make it to the world cup in a long time. And I think the last time they made it here was 94. So yeah, they hope have a great tournament. Yeah, definitely. Well, then we go into Argentina versus Algeria. Algeria who had Hans Moussa at the right wing over Mahrez. Finally got the chance, finally replaced. Great player. Algeria started off well, started off with two, started off with a goal for Messi really early on that got fouled for offside.
[00:11:23] Then Algeria actually scored with a wonderful goal that also was offside. Well, and then in the 17 minute Lionel Messi scored. The pass had an amazing pass there. Messi, of course, crying. I could go all technical about why I think Algeria was a little bit asleep on the wheel with Messi. I mean, Messi was always between the lines, like moving from the off space into the center. And they thought like led to so no pressure.
[00:11:51] That's probably a so no defense, probably easier than to put two men on Messi. So there's a couple of things. I'm like, they didn't make him that hard to actually move around. But to be fair, when he did get the ball and he did have the space, we definitely showed for it. Right? Absolutely. Absolutely. I think with him, the things that he was really good at today was actually walking around the pitch at certain times, but being at the right place at the right time.
[00:12:15] And also for all the walking around that we spoke about, that someone here spoke about at the start of the show, when we started the work up dailies. He actually did a lot of defensive work today as well. He's put in a shift defensively as well. And he was doing a lot of things on the pitch that I thought, wow, this guy really is exceptional. Where is he getting all his energy from? It didn't look like he was putting in too much effort. That was the beauty of it all. Like it never didn't look, it looked effortless. The complete package looked effortless for me.
[00:12:43] He looked very fit to be fair. His heat map was all the way from right wing back until like mid forward, like number 10. Now, like in all fairness, I think Algeria didn't have the battle plan ready for him, which I, it feels a little bit sour for myself to talk about that. Right. But especially when you saw the last goal, he got like 10 yards to take the ball and take his shot in. And then he scores a terrific goal. Don't get me wrong there.
[00:13:12] But maybe you can get a little bit closer to Messi when he gets the ball. That might be helpful. Right. So I think there's that, but that that's all beside the points. Mistake gets made in football. A hat trick, getting the 16 goals in already at the first match. I'm going to be honest though. I think this Argentina team, I didn't give it much word before we started. I said France definitely look better. I think still after yesterday, France does look better, but this wasn't too disappointed.
[00:13:40] And I, I've seen the Algerians play last week. Honestly, I'm really surprised by the Argentina team. And I will gladly admit I might be wrong there. It's, it's a tricky one because it was a perfect combination of Algeria being a bit more passive as, I don't know if they've certain times. I just was wondering why Messi is getting so much space. So, or was Messi just creating all that space through his magic? I don't, it's really hard to actually guess that.
[00:14:08] But whereas I think with however good Argentina play, it's almost a thing like everything works wonderfully and everything's going through Messi. But what if things are not going through Messi as in, what if he's blocked out of the game? What next? That's the difference between a France and an Argentina right now is that in France, it doesn't matter if today, Dembele had a very average day, but it didn't really matter. Dembele has an existing current ball and door. So you know what I mean?
[00:14:33] Well, and it doesn't matter because you can always kiss the ball behind space and there's nobody else to keep, to keep up with any of these strikers from, from France. While Messi, you have to pass the ball on his feet. So I think that should be much easier to defend. And I don't think it's also very, like, I don't think we've seen a fighting match last world championship between the Netherlands and Argentina where they were all over Messi. Yeah. They kept it really clean.
[00:15:02] I think the most, the worst fall made was actually by Messi itself, ironically speaking, this match. So I don't feel like, I think they might, sometimes I feel like they give him too much respect on the page. Does that make sense as an opponent? Yeah. Yeah. But then again, they did everything right. So I'm not going to do anything away from his performance. A head freak is always an insane result.
[00:15:25] And honestly, I'm just happy to see that the superstars, we saw Yomal come in and give two amazing passes. You see the strength from him. We saw Mbappé and Dembele perform, especially Mbappé, right? We saw Haaland perform and we saw Messi perform right away. I can't wait to hopefully see, like, I'm going to, Ronaldo look fit as a 25 year old, honestly, on training. Let's hope he can do it tonight as well.
[00:15:52] Because this is, in the end, we're not seeing the low scoring matches. We are seeing the superstars being the superstars we want them to be. I have so much to complain about outside of the football. I've got so much to complain about the city hydration breaks, but the matches itself so far and the players, they're bringing it. Absolutely. I think this is so far from a pure footballing point of sense. And I've mentioned this on the podcast before as well. Every game for a neutral has been exceptional.
[00:16:21] I can't think of a bad game as such in quotes, this whole tournament so far. Every game has been brilliant to watch. And there's been end-to-end football. And it's almost like there's no one that is really caring about parking the bus, which is lovely to see. Yes. Australia, well, we did our own little way of not parking the bus, but we had our own tactic. That's a tactic that works for us. Japan did as well, though. Yeah. A bit. But Japan, that's the national state as well, where they counter really well. Same with us. We counter really well.
[00:16:50] So if that's your game plan and you displayed well and you're not doing it just for a particular tournament. No, true. Ivo Kapo Verde. Well, just being countering. Most terrific mates to watch. Exactly. Exactly. So it's been a beautiful season. I mean, a beautiful World Cup so far. And I just hope it stays this way. Who knows? The final games could be dead, Rubbers. Don't care. I wanted to start with the bang and starting with the bang. And that's the beauty of what's happening right now. Exactly.
[00:17:14] We ended with a banger as well with Austria versus Jordan, which, well, not like a one you would go up and spend your night on. Right. But I woke up early, got some breakfast in, sat down for a middle cup of coffee and some breakfast before the kids woke up and watched that match. To be fair. Again, seriously cool football. And your Jordan not dropping back, purely attacking. I think Austria was a better team. I mean, there was no denying that, but it is all cool.
[00:17:43] They've been away for a long year, long while. Austria was the last time I think was in 2008. They were at a world championship. On top of my mind. But it was 36 years since they won a World Cup match. Jordan always know that it's of course a debut on the World Cup stage. So, in the end, I think we've seen an amazing match and the only one that actually dropped the ball literally in this match was the goalkeeper for Jordan.
[00:18:09] I think he was really, really poor and probably the worst goal keeping performances I've seen on the tournament so far. To be fair. That's yeah. And you would know from your vintage of being in goals, you probably understand the difficulty of it. I mean, sure. But also like corners just missed the ball completely by jumping every shoulder on target. I mean, also to be fair, Zidane from Mexican's Messi. Yes.
[00:18:38] It wasn't his best match either because the second goal Messi scored terrific, but he could just, he shouldn't never drop that ball, right? So there's a little bit to be seen there as well. But I think this was a poor performance by the goalkeeper. I'm sorry about that. If not for that, I think Jordan would be in the match a little bit longer because they did create the better chances. They hit the crossbar and the goalkeeper from Austria is a good goalkeeper. So yeah, I think this is also tournament where we see a lot of goalkeepers making a difference so far. And I'm all for it.
[00:19:07] But match ended 3-1. I think Anatovic's VAR goal got disallowed. Fairly so actually. So that was a good shout. The referee said it didn't happen. They looked at it. It was definitely hands ball. So I think it was a good shout. Two minutes later, Anatovic scored again. And this for this time rightfully here. It's all, Anatovic is always a player that if you see him playing, I'm like, why isn't he playing at a top club? Because he always scored, always delivered. He's just as mad as a donkey. Yeah.
[00:19:36] There was a time where we were, Man United was linked with Anatovic as well. And it was just because of his, I think he had some really right wing fascist ideas that he put on whatever. And it was, I think like good thing was that United just went nicely away from him. But this is, he's always tried to play at big clubs, but just never worked up. There's the talent in there. He was compared to Zlatan at some point as well in his career. So. He's got the build. I think he's got the natural skill. He's got, Zlatan has the right bit and it's a bit of craziness. I think he overdoes it a little bit.
[00:20:06] Maybe that's the problem. But great performance, nevertheless. Scoring two as well, right? So, I mean, we go into our weekly or daily topic actually these days, of course, the baller, the bother and the drama. Well, I'm going to leave the baller up to you, Shaq, because I think there's no denying that. Look, we've spoken, we've spoken lyrically about him so far. It's Lionel Messi. There's no doubt. I think scoring a hat-trick, his first World Cup hat-trick today. It's just brilliant. It was amazing to see. And it's all the tears that we spoke about.
[00:20:36] And I mean, he's joining some really good company as well. And he's literally, he's got the chance to be the top and hopefully stays there for a long period of time. But yeah, there's Zimbabwe that's just following him straight behind him. But yeah, I'm really happy for him. And this, he has to be the baller of the day. The Bottler of the Day, you have a different opinion from me, but I can come with your opinion as well. What was your, let's discuss your Bottler of the Day. I thought Zidane, probably the Bottler of the Day.
[00:21:06] Yeah. Sounds a bit hard. That's a fair shot. But he played a really good match against the Netherlands. If he didn't get the second goal considered, they would still be in a fight and that match would probably end up a little bit different. You look, it didn't look good at first. Like the first goal was good, but still like soft hands, what they call them as a goalkeeper. You are in the right spot. You are rightly placed, but just your hands go backwards. So you'd be probably not confident enough. Yeah. The second goal, definitely bad. Like not confidently.
[00:21:33] He, and you saw his father on the stands nodding. Like, yeah. Although the joining the goalkeeper was worse. I think the impact from Zidane was higher. So I would say Zidane would be the Bottler. That's a fair, completely fair shot. Completely fair shot. I completely agree. I think it was just, it was just unfortunate. I think the worst part of social media seemed to show up as well. I think on social media, there was a lot of clips going around of him doing stuff in training. And I think it's very reactionary. The poor chap had one bad game. It's not the end of the world. He'd be fine. Exactly.
[00:22:02] And you said Senegal because they should have been in a fight more, right? Yeah. I think after the first half, you thought, okay, maybe this is something that they can be, they can do something. And almost like they just switched. They just didn't have the intensity in the second half. And that played into France's hands really well. Yeah. Also that miss from Sar. Ouch. And I think they were slightly unlucky as well. There, there was a goal, a couple of goals that actually didn't, were ruled out or just didn't work. And it was named Jackson.
[00:22:31] Jackson, he's a frustrating striker where he does some crazy things, but then he also just can't do the simple things correctly. And there is a bit of quality in there, but just as well. He's got one heck of a shot though. Yeah. Yeah. I, like I said, I didn't like the goal that they, they scored. I think the goalkeeper Magnan didn't look good either. So yeah. That was true there. Off to the drama. Yeah. I mean, there's plenty of drama here.
[00:22:56] I think we've got Mbappe, Messi and then Haaland, the best three score course alive. If you don't include Ronaldo in that stage right now, all on the same day, all hunting the same record, all scoring at least two goals. Oof. I don't have anything to say. I mean, there's something going on there. The golden boot race, it seems to be extremely difficult right now. And it's going to be interesting to see what happens overnight as well with. With Ronaldo and Kane. Exactly. Exactly. It's going to be good.
[00:23:26] Really good. I'm looking forward to it, but yeah. They say it's gave us the great golden boot subplot in the World Cup history so far. And so much to look forward to. That believes us though. I think with a little bit of call of action and a little bit of housekeeping. So don't turn off yet because we'll have something new. We've got a question. How can we support you if we don't want to go in a subscription way? Well, we can do that in two ways. And one, I prefer over the other. The most easy way to support us to give us a five-star review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.

But if you do want to spend a little bit of money, you can now buy us a cup of coffee. Basically through foodandreview.com slash buy a cup of coffee or buy me a coffee.com slash for a review. Anyways, we'll put the link in the description and it's just whatever you want to spare. You can drop it down. You can make it once, one time only. All fine. All legal.
[00:24:23] And we'll spend it on coffee basically. So to keep us through the night. I think that's also definitely way. Something else we've done. If you have subscribed to the Patreon, even as a free member, you have opted into a newsletter, but we've never sent a newsletter in our seven year life. But we are doing that now, Shaq. So we are starting sending a newsletter later on today. Probably weekly. I say might be two weekly depends on thing. We'll be back to food content.
[00:24:49] Of course, when the food content actually starts hitting again in the summer, over the summer, we will be recapping the podcasts there. So you can see the highlights. We'll be dropping information for the Patreons. We'll be dropping information about events. Basically show some behind the foot scene footages as well. What's going on with the team. And if you want to opt out, just click the opt out button on the first newsletter you receive. And you don't get it anymore. Even if you are a Patreon subscriber or a free subscriber. Just as easy as that.
[00:25:16] But we needed a little bit more focus on how we inform some of our fans. Because if you post a podcast a day, they get a lot of emails from us or a lot of pop-ups. And I think it's easier to just combine that information into one newsletter. So that's what we do now. And of course, 5-3 Reviews. We said it. Drop it everywhere. Join us at patreon.com slash foodinreview. Foodinreview.com if you want to see every single episode and want to see, well, or see some more information about the host.
[00:25:45] Drop us a message anywhere. FoodinReview at foodinreview on Instagram and at foodinreviewpodcast on TikTok. And of course, youtube.com slash foodinreview. Basically, foodinreview, drop us a like. Plenty to go in. I'm looking forward to tonight. We don't even have time anymore, Shaq, to talk about all tonight's matches. But I think England, Portugal, we got some action going on there, right? 100%. Looking forward to the Portugal game. Looking forward to the England game. And then we also, I'm keen to see how Ghana play and also Colombia.
[00:26:15] So we've got some really fun games coming up today. Exactly. As we do tomorrow, we'll talk about it. See you tomorrow. Bye bye. Bye.
